NEWS March 23, 2003 In his tour around Punjab, President Abdul Kalam was met by four men protesting the death sentence handed down to Davinderpal Singh by the Indian Supreme Court. The four men - Daljit Singh, Secretary General of the All India Sikh Student Federation; Rajbir Singh; Jaspal Singh; and Joginder Singh of the Khalra Action Committee - were holding a banner which read "Stop, Stop, Stop the Murder of Innocent Davinderpal Singh" in front of the Akal Takht to be seen by the President. The men were accosted by plain-clothed policemen,
beaten, and taken away. Their whereabouts are unknown. It is also unknown whether President Kalam
ever saw the protesters, the banner, or the scuffle. |
